Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I very sadly lost my wife Monika to a brain tumour in September 2014. She was an absolute inspiration to me; and watching her go through the nightmare of having to deal with a grade IV inoperable cancerous brain tumour for over 2 years was truly heartbreaking. Had it not been for the courage she had shown through this time I don't think I could have been as strong a person that I appeared to be whilst she was still with us.

One of the biggest frustrations that a lot of people who are diagnosed with brain tumours have is the lack of options available to them. The treatments haven't really moved in a number of years and we need to change this.

Brain Tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and young adults and yet only 2% of the funding goes towards this area of cancer research.

I want to do my bit to help improve this, and if we can raise over £10,000 then I will be able to ask The Brain Tumour Charity to put all the donations attributed to Monika's fund towards research into high grade tumours, like the one that Monika had. The outlook for people diagnosed with grade III and IV tumours is dreadful so more research needs to be done to help find a cure to this horrendous disease.

Any donations either directly into this fund or towards me taking on this insane challenge of running 100k in 1 day will be greatly appreciated.

I am going to be attempting this 100k on September 12th by running along the Thames pathway from Putney Bridge to Henley. It is without doubt the hardest physical challenge I have ever planned to take on in my life. I can't imagine how I am going to manage to run for 11 hours in 1 day to achieve this, but it is something I really want to do.

Anyone inspired by my story or the story on the Brain Tumour Charity website can join the 'In Memory of Monika Newsum-Smith' team on the JustGiving website and raise money towards this target.
