Story
The freezing weather, relentless snow and general lack of Spring have inspired us to jump into the icy cold sea for a long swim. On July 21st we are swimming from mainland England to the Isle of Wight, across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The dark Solent, with its treacherous double tide and unpredictable currents, can reach five knots and has caused 4,000 shipwrecks.
So why are we attempting such a voyage in these jellyfish, pirate and sewage-infested waters? To raise money for the Isle of Wight Samaritans, who provide 24:7 support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope, or at risk of suicide through their telephone helpline. Isle of Wight Samaritans desperately needs funds as they are growing fast and have increased the number of volunteers taking calls. The Swim is their major fund raising event and provides half their income; without it they would struggle. Last year they had 30 swimmers and raised £30,000. This year they hope to equal that, so please help.
The distance is a mile and a quarter and the tides are strong, so we are setting out from Hurst Castle on the mainland and hopefully an hour later we will reach Colwell Bay on the Island. The Freshwater Lifeboats, kayaks and rigid inflatable boats will accompany us. Katherine will be wearing a sensible wetsuit, and Jonathan will clad in the briefest of trunks and greased up, head-to-toe in goose fat.
Donating through JustGiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us. Isle Of Wight Samaritans get your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, JustGiving sorts out the Gift Aid. So do dig deep and sponsor us NOW!
Many thanks,
Katherine and Jonathan
