Story
In October I will be starting a nine-month volunteering placement in Naivasha, Kenya with Engineers Without Borders UK - joining their partner organisation Sanivation.
Sanivation install modern container-based toilets in people's home and produce fuel briquettes made from the faecal sludge they collect. I will be supporting them to develop and expand their treatment processes.
Engineers Without Borders UK will be providing me with a stipend to cover living expenses in Kenya. I'll be relying on my own savings for everything else. Sanivation is a social enterprise dedicated to improving the overall dignity, health and environment of urbanising communities in East Africa through delivering clean, safe and efficient sanitation services.
In urbanising communities they install modern container-based toilets in people's homes for free and charge a small monthly fee to service them. Then, instead of dumping the waste, they transform it into a clean burning alternative to charcoal. This dependable, user-focused, and vertically integrated sanitation service addresses the full sanitation value chain and allow families living in urbanising communities throughout East Africa to live a modern and healthy life.
