St Gemma's Hospice is a local, independent charity providing the best possible care and support for people in Leeds with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. We support patients and their families, both in the Hospice and in the community, at any stage of their illness.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Despite still being in recovery from a knee operation I have decided to take on the challenge of Rowing Windermere on Saturday 11 June 2011 to raise money for St. Gemma's Hospice.

Having no rowing experience and being a fairly weak swimmer would have made most people think twice but it is such a good cause I just couldn't refuse.

I am doing this with my colleague Andy Higgins. The event is meant to be "fun" but as soon as the word race was mentioned we have decided to take it very seriously. This has involved many hours of absolutely no preparation whatsoever. We do still expect our two man team "Oar-gasmic" to bring home a medal.

We have been encouraged to wear outfits for the row and any suggestions would be welcomed.

The Windermere Row is the longest running event in aid of St. Gemma’s Hospice and in 2011 celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Since the event started, thousands of people have rowed Lake Windermere and over £1.5 million has been raised for the Hospice.

St Gemma's Hospice was opened in 1978 in Moortown, Leeds. It is the largest hospice in West Yorkshire and the fourth largest in England. We provide specialist medical and nursing care for people with life threatening illnesses, predominantly cancer, along with support for their families.

Thank you
