Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My wife Lena took part in the London triathlon last year but this year its my turn!
I am taking part in the London Triathlon in September to help raise money for the CF (Cystic Fibrosis) trust. The challenge consists of a half mile swim, 20k cycle and a 5k run. My aim is to COMPLETE all 3 legs!
So why the CF trust...as many of you know my daughter Eleni has CF. She was diagnosed at 3 weeks. Eleni goes to school, looks like any growing child, develops like any other growing child and is just as cheeky as any other child...but due to her condition she will be on an aggressive daily routine needing lots of medication until a cure is found and she'll be a familiar face at the Barts and the Royal London hospital where she has a great team who look after her and keep her well.
CF is one of the UK's most common life-threatening inherited diseases. It affects over 9000 youngsters, clogging vital organs with thick sticky mucus. Lena and I both have a 'defective' CF gene which we were unaware of. We are both unaffected but it means we have a 1 in 4 chance of having a child with CF.
Cystic Fibrosis is a complex condition, affecting not only the lungs, but the pancreas, liver and other organs too. While our knowledge and understanding of CF, from its underlying genetic causes to ways of treating it, have grown immeasurably, there is still much to do if we are to reduce its impact on people with CF.
Daily treatment for Eleni consists of chest physiotherapy, vitamins, enzyme pills with all food, LOTS of exercise, and so many courses of antibiotics I have lost count! Eleni also occasionally has to use a nebuliser and some horrid drugs in adult doses. This aggressive treatment has kept her well enough to be able to keep up with her peers and be a 'normal' child.
From the very start, back in 1964, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust has invested in research into all aspects of CF. They continue to be one of the largest funders of research into CF and, with their partners in the UK and internationally, they are committed to unlocking the secrets to treating - and beating - CF.
We are very optimistic and hope there will be a cure within the years to come to ensure Eleni lives to have her own children and live a normal life...but as I say we are not there yet. Therefore I am asking you all to dig deep in your pockets to sponsor me to help make CF stand for CURE FOUND.
