Story
Thanks for checking out my page! I set this up because I've been given the incredible opportunity to volunteer in Burkina Faso for two months this summer, working with local communities to help develop their economic and social potential. I'm doing this with International Service, an NGO that has been working to improve peoples lives in developing countries for over 60 years (see more below). To be able to do this, I need to raise £800 which goes directly towards the projects that International Service run every year all over the world. And I'm doing various different fundraising challenges to make that happen - one of which is illustrated by the extremely photoshopped profile pic of me in front of Ingleborough, one of the '3 peaks' I'm going to climb in May. So please donate what you can, however big or small, it's all very much appreciated!
With few
natural resources and one of the highest population densities in Africa,
Burkina Faso is the second poorest country in the world. More than 80% of the
population relies on subsistence agriculture which is vulnerable to drought and
poor soil. As a result, rural people are moving to towns and cities to search
for work, leading to the growth of unplanned slums which lack basic water and
sanitation services. Burkina’s literacy rates are among the worst in the
world. In the countryside, it is possible that there might be only one literate
person in a village of 1,000 people.
International Service has been active in Burkina Faso since 1978. Their
projects focus on working with disabled people and women.
International Service is a government-funded charity working in developing countries in community-based organisations, established national charities, and government departments. Their goal is to support people to understand their rights - and put them into action - so they are empowered to change their own lives for the better. And they've been doing this for over 60 years.
