Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
As some of you know I have done a huge amount of fundraising over the past couple of years for FSID (Foundation for the Study of Infant Death). I felt that it was about time that I gave a bit back to the people that have supported me during this time.
That is why I have decided to support the Fire Fighters Charity with the Red Cross; you guys have given me so much support I would like to now give some back.
Every year, thousands of fire fighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity is here for fire fighters during their times of need, and assists over 13,500 individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.
It costs over £9 million every year to keep the Charity running, and with No Government Funding, they are completely reliant upon donations from the general public and fire community.
The Charity is now keen to use their burgeoning profile to good effect, by also focusing on prevention.
As a national charity, they have a unique opportunity to become a positive, apolitical voice for fire safety. Any contribution which they can make to this area will be a positive one, and they maintain that if they can save just one fire fighter from death or serious injury as a result of their campaigning, then they will have succeeded.
In November 2008 the Charity held its first major activity in this area - the National Schools Fire Safety Day with the theme 'Plan a safe escape'.
My challenge is to drive a number of different vehicles, which may include handling an HGV, testing the tough off-road terrain by getting stuck in with a digger, JCB or Caterpillar, sounding the siren on a fire engine or even cruising in a combine harvester around given assault courses for the vehicle (5 in total for the day). To complete the challenge I have to complete each course in the given vehicle and get it signed off by the adjudicator.
