At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

In memory of my special, much loved Mam, Grace Elizabeth Salkeld, who developed Alzheimer's nearly nine years ago.

Mam was a vibrant, loving, caring person, always laughing and smiling.

When she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s she received medication. She remained capable for a long time. She still managed to do everyday tasks, and also her knitting and crotcheting, which she had done all her life. Things started to decline, we realised that we could do nothing to halt the Alzheimer’s progression.

We all tried to help as best we could, but Mam being an independent person would get very frustrated at not being able to do things for herself.  After caring for Mam in her own home, we had to make the difficult decision for her to be placed into care.  This broke our hearts, I kept saying that Mam wouldn’t have given up on us, so why were we giving up on her.  It soon became apparent that the decision was the right one. Mam settled in Lindisfarne, and her carers loved and cared for her as if she was their Mam, always at her side for anything she needed.

In April this year, Mam suffered a massive stroke. The prognosis from the hospital was that the stroke had advanced the Alzheimer’s to its end stages.  She forgot how to communicate, and how to swallow food. The hospital sent her back to the care home for what they termed "end of life care".

Those last 13 weeks of Mam's life will stay with me, but way to the back of my memory box, as I will always think of mam laughing and loving.
