They say everyone's lives will be touched by cancer at some stage or another whether it be personally, via a family member, friend or friend of a friend. Cancer is all around and sadly seems more prevalent in our lives but positively the percentage cure rate is going up and much of that work is centred around the incredible Christie Hospital here in Manchester.
In the past 6 months I have had 4 life changing experiences and aside from the birth of my incredible little boy the other 3 have all been close family members affected by cancer.
Firstly, my dad, Roy, who has won many personal battles over the past 5 years with various illnesses and has just finished 6 weeks of radiotherapy for throat cancer. He is currently recovering but is still unable to eat unaided and his strength and attitude are humbling. You are my superhero dad and I will be with you for that first drink when you beat this.
My sister-in-law Bev who found a lump in her breast last November and has since been treated successfully with both chemotherapy and soon radiotherapy. Her bald head makes us look like Right Said Fred when we are together but she has shown an amazing spirit and support to other cancer sufferers by donating a bell to The Christie in Oldham to signal the end of her treatment and for others to ring too in the future!
My sister-in-law Gayna who was the happiest, gentlest and kindest of women I have ever met. Her cruel battle with cancer saw no signs....little pain along the way but a huge knockout blow for our whole family when on Boxing Day she was diagnosed with terminal cancer after having a bad back and told initially by doctors that she had sciatica! My brother, his gorgeous children and our families and friends were at her bedside day and night for two whole months as this full of life woman with so much to offer the world slipped away at the tender age of 52. No words can convey the pain and loss but we miss you so much every day.
This run and subsequent fundraising events are just a small token of my appreciation to The Christie for the support it has offered my family throughout this incredibly tough time. My efforts are just a grain of sand in an ocean of pain, hope and research but I hope that my story has given you a moment to think about what matters in life and how short and cruel life can be at times. Never miss the opportunity to tell the people you love what they mean to you and don't sweat the small stuff.
Everyone has their own story and this is mine....so please donate to The Christie not just for me but for the millions of people of some you will know and those who you may not who need that arm around them to say you are there for them and for the amazing work that they do in supporting families like ours now and in the future.
My target of raising £500 is possible with your help, love and support so let's see how far we can take this and say a huge thank you from us all!?
Finally, and possibly more pointedly....if you find a lump, a sore, a pain that won't go away or anything you know just doesn't feel right...don't hesitate to get it checked out. It will in most cases be nothing and your mind will be at rest but if it is something more sinister the speed of your response could save your life.
Thank you
