Story
In order to get help via the NHS, majority of people have to have frequent serious self harming/suicidal thoughts, if you are deemed at risk enough, you'll get just 6 sessions, provided they think they can fix the issue in those sessions. If not, you'll be turned away & told to find a private therapist.
Even if you get the 6 free sessions, you still have to have the mental & physical strength, as well as financial stability to get yourself to you nearest therapy centre.
Can you imagine how much of an insurmountable mountain that would feel like when your seriously depressed? Not only that, but why should someone have to get to the point of suicidal thoughts before they get help? The NHS is doing all it can, however, I don't believe someone should get that low before getting help & sometimes there's a need for more practical help along side counselling, which understandably the NHS just can't provide.
No one is immune to having mental health struggles, anyone's life can be turned upside down in an instant. Frequently this has a domino effect, where many things fall apart at the same time. It's not until your in this position that you find out if you have support or not, or even how well equipped it is to help you. At the moment it's so important that there is somewhere for people to go that has practical, hands-on help to get through the potential minefield.
Catalyst, broadly helps people who have struggles with mental health, drugs/alcohol misuse, domestic violence & criminal justice. They have a wide variety of programs to help people such as their "amigo" program, which helps people get back out and about, to helping with housing, legal issues, as well as group activities including music, walking, wellbeing, young people specific drop in centres etc etc.
Catalyst is Guildford based, so all money raised will be going to local people that need support.
