Story

On the 8th August 2017 it will be 20 years since my mum had her kidney transplant at St George's Hospital. In celebration of this brilliant milestone and in recognition of the support that St George's has given to my mum and many others, I'm running a 10k to raise money for St George's Kidney Patient Association (SGKPA).

As well as offering vital support for patients over the years, SGKPA has also worked hard to purchase many necessary items for kidney patients including:

  • Immunoadsorption machine to allow ABO incompatible transplants to take place
  • Laparascopic stack to enable key hole surgery for donor nephrectomy
  • Transonic ultrasound machine for vascular access monitoring
  • Omnitract device for removing donor kidneys and transplantation
  • Lifeport machines to preserve kidneys

At the end of December 2012 approximately 55,000 adults in the UK were undergoing Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) and the number of people on RRT in the UK continues to increase and at present it is increasing by around 2,000 patients per year. Thus the work that SGKPA do is so important and will continue to be so.

My mum's kidney transplant completely transformed her life in so many areas. From not having the energy to climb stairs to being able to climb mountains, from being on a severely restricted diet to being able to eat normally, from being constantly exhausted to being able to live fully again. St. George's hospital gave my mum her life back and I'm so proud of her and so thankful for the work that SGKPA do.

I will be running the 6th Richmond Park 10k Series on the 2nd July.
