Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I've done it! It was a great experience. Loads of people cycling together, nice views of London and great aim. Was a bit tough. There were 5 sections. After getting to the second break point (40 km) I was really tired and wondered how I will make it but as I cycled along I kept the pace and at the end started taking everyone over :-). Still had to come back to the train station and up the hill to my village :-). Visited Marylebone Farmers Market on my way.
When I got an email from my charity about night cycling in London I clasped my hands and signed up. Perfect – I thought – I will be able to pair my long love for a bicycle with raising money towards a good cause. I have some experience – having cycled with my wife along the coast in Poland, Cornwall, Belgium and Holland and doing occasional commuting by bicycle to different parts of London. Now as I live in Great Missenden I cannot do commuting any more but instead have to cycle over 2 miles each way every day to and from railway station (seems not much but hey, this is Chiltern Hills!).
As promised I cycled to work a week before Nightrider (last 6-mile section I did actually after work as I got a puncture and my glue did not work quite as expected so I had to abandon my bicycle and get to work by tube).
I have been Amnesty supporter for a good couple of years now. How it started – I do not even remember. Over that time I realised though how many groups and individuals all over the world need you and me to back them up in their fight for justice. Very often we do not realise how much a simple letter to someone in power in oppressive country can do to release innocent person from prison. How much a letter to that prisoner can do to lift their spirits. Amnesty helps in whole lots of ways – shipping radios to Burma to raise awareness among the people, pressing powerful organisations to take actions to defend persecuted, helping vulnerable people to protect their livelihoods and environment. They say: “Our purpose is to protect people wherever justice, fairness, freedom and truth are denied.” Please give generously so Amnesty’s work has even bigger impact!
