Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 14th September I'm taking part in a 10km walk around the grounds of Dudley Zoo & Castle to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society (in partnership with Bupa Care Homes).
As many of you will know my Grandad passed away aged just 61 in July 1990 after suffering with alzheimers. My Nan cared for him for as long as she could but in the end when the illness took over he had to go into All Saints Hospital. Even though I was only 9 when he passed away I have so many happy memories unfortunately the ones near the end were not of my Grandad but the person that the illness had turned him into.
I'm also doing the walk to remember my Nan who suffered with dementia. In the end once Nan couldn't cope at home she went into Grafton Lodge in Oldbury where she spent nearly five years and then once she suffered a stroke she had to go into Newbury Manor Nursing Home in Oldbury until she passed away on the 1st April 2009.
Alzheimers/dementia is such a cruel illness and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. To watch your loved one lose all recollection of who they are, who their loved ones are etc is awful.
I've decided to take part in the 10km Memory Walk to raise a little money and raise some awareness of such a heartbreaking incurable illness.
£15 pays for someone with dementia to enjoy a singing for the brain session, boosting their confidence and well being, £31 means a carer can spend an hour with a dementia support worker to learn coping strategies and feel more able to take care of their own health and well being and £50 pays for someone with dementia to go to weekly dementia cafe sessions for a month, where they can meet others, share experiences and feel less isolated.
I know that times are hard but every little bit can help go towards making a difference.
