A huge amount of respect is due to sufferers of the stigmatized invisible illnesses. 1 in 4 of us will experience some kind of mental illness in the course of a year, and 'cheer up' or 'stop being silly' is not enough to make that right. Awareness needs to be raised and it should be understood that just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't real.

I'm giving up drinking for a year, partly for my own health, but also because what better way to raise awareness of such a worthy cause, than by bringing it up at every social gathering I attend.

As a keen drinker of whisky, wine, cider, gin, and just a general booze hound, I hope you'll support me in this very out of character endeavor. I promise not to let you down.
