Story
As many of you may know, repercussions of a life-threatening car crash almost 15 years ago put me back into hospital in September 2014, forcing me to miss a business trip to Las Vegas and forcing me to withdraw my place in the 2015 Virgin London Marathon.
Since my crash my motto has always been to live life
to the fullest, making as many memories as I can along the way!
Those who know me well, understand how devastated I was to be unable to complete my London Marathon journey and fundraising challenge, and my injuries left me with the difficult decision to close this chapter and to accept that whilst I wont get the opportunity again, and wont ever tick this off my bucket list, I must keep on reminding myself how fortunate I am to still be here, and to make the most I possibly can out of life.
Again, as many are already aware, myself and (now husband) Andy, had only ‘officially’ been together 6 days prior to my car crash, and at just 17 and 18 years old, I don’t think anyone believed we would last, especially in the unlucky situation we started our relationship on! Hardly the ‘Honeymoon period’ most relationships start with, Andy sat in an uncomfortable hospital chair next to my bed for hours each evening, after being at work all day with me attached to drips and wires fighting for my life.
But despite this, Andy was by my side throughout my recovery process in hospital, and not only visited me every day for the 3 months I was an inpatient, once I was discharged, he remained at my side and supported my ongoing recovery process along with my family, which continued for the next few years.
We have since gone on to have 2 beautiful daughters, a much loved dog, have enjoyed visiting 16 different countries together, along with several UK breaks too, we have also progressively moved up the property ladder together over the years, the icing on the cake for us though was without a doubt when in December 2016 we finally became Mr & Mrs Jennett, marrying in the idyllic Lapland, where not only did we become husband and wife, but our amazing families also become one!
After an incredible 15 years together, full of love and laughter, Andy understands my love for adventure, and my desire and craving for crazy plans – but he also understands why, he understands I need to push
myself to the limits - because I can!
So many people are left unable to do the things they had dreamt of doing after being involved in an accident, especially an accident as serious as mine, so I know and appreciate how lucky I am, that despite all my body has been through, it is still physically and mentally able to do most things! I therefore feel that I owe it to myself to take advantage of this!
Andy is not only my husband, father to our daughters, and my best friend, but he is one of the few people who truly understands me, and unfortunately for him, this means he often gets roped into most of my crazy ideas and plans, which a lot of, if it wasn’t for me, he wouldn’t even consider himself, this challenge certainly being one!
However there really is no one else I would want to share this experience with!
So, on 1st June, we will together, climb to the top of Ben Nevis – the tallest mountain in the UK – standing at 1345m tall!
This is a huge challenge for anyone, but looking back at photos of me in hospital after my crash, having to learn to walk again after 8 weeks bed ridden - to be able to even attempt this is going to be a huge personal achievement which I am so excited about!
This forms part of some new personal goals that I have set myself, and I would really like to use this challenge as an opportunity to not only tick things off my own bucket list, but to also raise as much money for charity along the way as I can!
We are immensely grateful to Running Imp for their help and support to us both in this personal challenge, making it possible, and as a thank you for this support, have decided we will be raising money for their charity of the year which is Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance! We have also decided to try and raise a £1 for every metre climbed between us so £1345 is our target!
The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is a dedicated Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and responds to approximately 1000 emergency call-outs every year. As a Charity, they receive no direct Government funding and are totally reliant on members of the communities they serve to raise the funds needed to keep their helicopter flying.
The charity has been in the air since 1994, and the iconic yellow helicopter can fly of speeds over 200mph, enabling them to deliver critical care as quickly as possible, which can often make the difference between life and death. The crew provides the most advanced clinical skills to people in what is often their greatest hour of need.
The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance have committed to extending their hours of operation to become a 24-hour Helicopter Emergency Medical Service. Flying additional hours means they have the potential to reach and help over 400 additional patients every year.
Emergencies can happen at any time; this is why they have taken the bold decision to increase their flying hours and expand their Helicopter Emergency Medical Service operation from 12-hours (7 am to 7 pm) to a 24-hours, 7 days a week. This means huge peace of mind to members of the public, as the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance in the East Midlands to provide this lifesaving service.
Ironically after my car crash in 2005 due to the time of day this fell outside of the air ambulances flying hours, so I was transported via
road, so this is a cause also close to home, and one I am proud to be supporting not only through the organisation I work for, but personally too!
None of us know how long we are here for, so all we can do is make the most of now, and I ask you to support us in this by donating to this amazing charity!
