Last year the Southby Family nominated 2009 as ‘the year of no waste’. We set about buying smarter, using up our leftovers more effectively, composting and recycling even more efficiently. We encouraged the children to think about when and how things could be mended rather than replaced; we bought local and thought about our food miles. Did it work? Well yes it did – maybe not no waste, no one is perfect – but certainly less waste.
Our weekly black rubbish bin was virtually empty – no problem for us the six weeks of strikes by the refuse collectors around – there was nothing in it.
Not so the green recycling bin, which overflowed, until a helpful child climbed into it and jumped up and down.
So what now for 2010? If last year was the year of less waste, this year is the year of less waist. It seems that in my eagerness to use up all those scraps of meat and vegetables I was rather too keen to cover them in cheese and cream or dip them in breadcrumbs and deep fry them.
So, instead of consoling myself with penguin biscuits, I am instead going to trek and camp across in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Your support for their work in researching and seeking cures for heart disease would be much appreciated.
