Story
As you may already know Kate has lived with osteitis pubis, a condition leading to severe chronic pain and requiring the use of crutches and a wheelchair, for a period of four and a half years. With the help of her family, friends, and incredible surgeons she recovered and is back on her feet!
Many people however have a disability that cannot be cured, and affects many of the aspects of life that we take for granted. Not everyone has the same amazing support network as we do, and find themselves cut-off due to their disability. As a result we have decided to ask you to donate what you might have spent on a wedding gift for us to an incredible charity which supports people living with life-limiting conditions.
Independence at Home is a charity that provides grants to people of all ages who have a physical or learning disability or long term illness and who are in financial need.
This financial help enables them to obtain mobility and disability equipment, home adaptations and other essential items to make an immediate, practical and positive effect on daily life. Often this assistance gives people back their independence and ability to access elements of life they simply would not be able to otherwise.
The charity was founded in October 1965. Since then the grants have improved independence and freedom for over 44,000 people from all parts of the UK. A grant could be towards;
- A powered wheelchair, improving mobility in and around the home and in the local community
- A riser-recliner chair, to be able to sit comfortably and go from sitting to standing more easily
- A wet room, to be able to have a shower independently and safely
Independence at Home’s grants vary between £300 and £600 and depend on the item of equipment purchased or building work carried out. The average grant is £350.
