My Mother had a fantastic memory and one of the keenest minds I knew, when things suddenly changed almost overnight.  It is a cruel illness; on average dementia sufferers live for about 10 years after the on-set of the disease, during which time as well as the obvious memory loss they go through various stages including, frustration, anger, paranoia and general decline until eventually they don’t recognise their surroundings or the people around them.  For the families it is heart breaking to be so helpless, watching them deteriorate, becoming child-like and in the end relying on facial expressions to convey your thoughts, hoping that somehow your face triggers a distant and happy memory.
