Project Volunteer Charity Golf Day · 4 June 2014

Over the last 12 years Project Volunteer has established itself as a trusted partner of, SOS Children's Villages in Botswana. Our goal for the next 10 years is to build on that foundation by inspiring local participation, empowering young people in Botswana to continue our work all year round.

Story

I went to Botswana with Project Volunteer for the first time 4 years ago and the charity has gone on to become an inspirational and ongoing part of my life.  They are a small charity but the work they do makes such a difference to the lives of hundreds of children, and to the volunteers of are lucky enough to visit those children, year on year.

The bonus of being a small charity is that PV doesn't cost anything to run, the people on the committee are all volunteers and there are no overheads to be met.  This means that every penny raised goes to the benefit of the children.

Project Volunteer's core commitments are to:

1/ Provide financial assistance to the Project Volunteer sponsored house in Serowe

2/ Take volunteers out once a year to give the workers some respite and show as much love and affection to the over 450 orphans as it is possible to show in 10 days

These two things are what I am fundraising for, and why I am putting myself through the slog of training and the pain of caffeine withdrawal!

I have been running a lot recently but I haven't done a race for a few years now.  I wanted to challenge myself, and a 10k just didn't sound challenging enough, while a half marathon was a step too far, so I settled on 8.2 miles!

I was also inspired by sober for October and thought I'd do my own take with caffeine free for PV instead.  For me, a four cups of tea or coffee a day drinker, I think this will be harder than going without alcohol!  Exercising self control four times a day for a month sounds much more likely to fail than missing that once a week binge drinking sessions, especially when so many people won't be drinking anyway so will be supporting each other through it.
