Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am running for AKU society for my dad, who is suffering from this disease. AKU is a debilitating and rare genetic disease, which affects cartilage and bone, slowly destroying them. It is common for people suffering from this disease to undergo many joint replacements and suffer from heart and kidney problems.

"alkaptonuria is like a time bomb: a disease for which there is no cure, and which sooner or later will make it impossible for sufferers to lead a normal life"

I am also hoping to raise awareness of the disease, as it is such a rare condition only affecting less than 1 in every 250,000,  it is unknown to the general public and poorly understood by many doctors. There is currently no prevention or cure for this disease but due to vast amount of research being performed hope is offered by a new drug which is a potential treatment for Alkaptonuria.

My dad has undergone two shoulder replacements in his early fifties and he is currently taking part in clinical trials for a new drug which is aiming to slow down the rate at which the disease progresses, preventing any further joint degeneration.
