Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We decided to use our wedding as a way of raising money for dementia UK. Both of our grandparents have been affected by this terrible illness and sadly Matthew's grandfather is no longer with us. This is why this is an important charity for the both of us and it is one which we hope our guests will be happy to support.
My (Kayleigh) grandfather was diagnosed with dementia in March 2014 and since then there has been a fast and violent progression. To those who know me well, my grandfather is incredibly special to me. He brought me up from a young age and gave up so much, including is retirement to look after my sister and I. Watching such an intelligent, funny, worldly, lovely man disappear through this illness has been heartbreaking and because it has progressed so quickly we have had little time to come to terms with it all.
It was his diagnosis that really wanted us to finally set a date, because we really wanted him to share our special day with us. The thought of having to walk down the aisle without him is too much to bare. When we told him that we had set a date his reply was, "Well it's about bloody time" which really made us laugh.
He has now started to forget who I am and at this point we are unsure if he will be able to be at our big day. Our hope is that the money we raise through our favours, gift list, and through anyone else wanting to donate, will help provide the help and care that so many people desperately need, so that others won't suffer the same fate as my grandfather.
There are currently no admiral nurses available in Wales and so he is missed out of the vital care that they can provide. We need to provide more help and support for those who have been diagnosed and Dementia UK are helping to do just that.
