Small Steps Can Make A BIG Difference
LATEST UPDATE:
In 2012 Susanna Petersburska from St Helens underwent life changing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery at St Louis Children's Hospital in America.
Since then Susanna and her family have been working hard to re-build her strength and develop her mobility through expensive private physiotherapy and training.
With Susanna's independence now in touching distance, the family's funds have tragically run out and the frightening possibility of Susanna losing some of the mobility she has gained since the operation is becoming a reality.
We are now fundraising for the vital private physiotherapy and rehab to continue her incredible journey and make her wishes come true.
OUR STORY:
Susanna is now 9 years old.
She was born 10 weeks premature and was diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy at 20 months old.
Before the SDR operation in America she lived with painful muscle tightness in her legs, but despite her disability she always dreamt of walking independently and playing with her friends.
To help her get her wish Susanna was reccommended for an operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR - http://www.gosh.nhs.uk/medical-information/procedures-and-treatments/selective-dorsal-rhizotomy)
SDR released the stiffness in her legs and gave her permanent flat feet. This will help her sit, make transitions between postures, and her standing and walking will also improve. The operation has a
100% success rate and Doctors expect Susanna will be able to walk after a prolonged course of specialist physiotherapy, which will dramatically improve her standard of living and enable her to follow her dreams.
Anyone interested in helping the Susanna's Steps Appeal is asked to contact Caudwell Children on 01782 600114 or to donate online visit www.justgiving.com/keepsusannamoving
Important note to donors: As long as Susanna requires the funds raised to pay for SDR treatment and post-operative rehabilitation, Caudwell Children will manage all payments of funds for the family. Should there come a time, for whatever reason, that Susanna no longer requires the funds raised then the monies raised will be used to provide similar donations to sick and disabled children living within the UK through the charity, Caudwell Children.
