Keiko's 1 mile (1.6km) outdoor swim for Cancer Research UK

Great London Swim 2014 · 30 August 2014 ·
Dear friends and family,
As some of you may well know, cancer has become very relevant to me over the past year – both personally and professionally.
I believe that additional funding for cancer research would help patients of today and the future, and I believe in CRUK’s consistent commitment to this area.
So my story….
Last year, at a regular health check-up, unexpectedly, I found a tumour.
It was big. It was uncertain what it was, and I was told that there was a substantial likelihood that it could be cancerous, presented together with positive tumour-marker figures. You could imagine, an entire month of very nervous days…. not knowing what my near future could look like.
Luckily, the surgery went well, and the biopsy did not find anything cancerous in my removed tumour.
Today, I am healthier than ever.
I was being treated in one of the top tertiary centres for this surgery and everyone I got to know whilst on the ward was suffering from cancer.Cancer can affect young and old, and their families. And there are limited treatment options.Since earlier this year, I have been working for a pharmaceutical company, where I am a part of the team developing future cancer drugs.
Making cancer drugs is very costly, and I believe the great effort of charities like CRUK is contributing significantly to critical progress.
Thank you very much for your support.
Keiko
PS. Don’t forget to add a little extra donation for my “no make-up” selfie on the bed ;-)
