Brave The Shave 2019 · 21 August 2019

We are dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for young cancer patients aged 13-24. We fund and build specialist units in NHS hospitals and provide dedicated staff, bringing young people together so they can be treated by teenage cancer experts in the best place for them.

Story

Hey everyone,  thanks for taking the time to visit my Just Giving page.

This year, I'm raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust by going full baldy. A lot of you are probably aware of my story so feel free to skip onto the bold text., but for those who aren't here's a snippet of my experience with cancer.

It was April 2014 and I was on my way home from work. Things were going pretty well. I'd recently started a job I enjoyed in sales, I was training as a reserve in the British Army and I was on the brink of passing my driving test, then everything took a turn for the worst.

Brain cancer, boom. To be honest I felt sorry for the student doctor who'd been given the job to tell me as it was way out of his comfort zone and depth. My mum was in tears, I was pissing myself with laughter (not sure why) but from that day on everything had changed.

I went through all the surgery chemo radiation etc and it was actually not too bad of a summer. Although, seeing my mum in tears saying she wished it was other way round broke my heart.

A couple of weeks later, I was transferred onto Edinburgh's Teenage Cancer Trust unit.

What these lot do is absolutely incredible I don't even have the vocabulary to explain it so I'll just explain to you a little bit about them.

Besides all the nursing, emotional support and signposting they really did go far beyond to what you or I would ever expect from a unit in a hospital.

They had pool tables, mini fridges, en suite bathrooms, games consoles, the full works! Until the novelty wore off after a while, it was easy to forget that I was actually in hospital with cancer.

Anything I needed /questions I had, they would do their absolute utmost to help me out with. I was even invited to an all expenses paid trip to Centeroarcs to an event called Find Your Sense of Tumour to meet young people who were in a similar position to myself.

Im yapping on so ill conclude this and put it into a wee nutshell for you. These lot make bad situations that little bit better for young people and their families everyday. They made my time in hospital so much less horrible and I have so much to thank them for, hence why I'm doing this to raise money for them.

7 people aged under 20 are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every day .  THIS isn't about me, this is just my story  to give you an idea about why the Teenage Cancer Trust are so fantastic.

I hope I can count on your support.

Kind regards,

Keir. X
