As most of you will know this summer I am travelling to Africa to undertake my medical elective in Malawi working in a hospital and in the community in town of Blantyre, along with my friend (another medic!) Katie Lummis. At the end of this time we are moving onto Tanzania to endeavour to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

Scaling the world's tallest freestanding mountain at 5,893 metres is no small challenge - It requires endurance of both the mind and fitness. Trekkers are advised to walk 'pole pole' which means 'slowly slowly' to allow for acclimatisation to the extreme high altitude, to help prevent altitude sickness.

 

We have decided to undertake this challenge not only to see some more of the world but also to raise awareness and some money for Mesothelioma UK. 

Pleural and peritoneal mesotheliomas are two lethal forms of cancer that are almost always associated with asbestos fibre inhalation or ingestion. Lag-time post exposure can be as much as 20-40 years. Once an individual presents to a health professional their median survival time ranges from 9 to13 months.

Mesothelioma UK is a charity which protects the health of asbestos-related cancer sufferers. It provides patients and families with information and advice on drugs trials, support groups and legal guidance, whilst also organising conferences where they are able to meet health professionals working in the field. Mesothelioma UK currently relies entirely upon voluntary donations so can therefore only continue to provide a service to victims of asbestos exposure when fuelled by the generous contributions from the public.
