Story

‘Completing the distance will be hugely satisfying’

On Sunday 23rd April, Kevin, 58, will be running the Britain’s Ocean City Half Marathon on behalf of Bowel Cancer West.

In April 2013, Kevin was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer and went under joint care from Derriford Hospitals Oncology and Colorectal teams.

Kevin started running around the age of 25 and has been fortunate to complete four full marathon events, including the London Marathon in 1993 & 1996.

Kevin said: “I have never been very fast but I enjoy running and taking part in 10k and half marathon events. I have also been fortunate to take part in four full marathon events, including the London Marathon 93 and 96.”

After 5 weeks of continuous radiotherapy and oral chemotherapy to reduce the tumour, Kevin’s treatment was a success and was admitted for surgery in September 2013. Kevin then lived with a Stoma and Loop Ileostomy before undergoing a re-joining operation in September 2014 and has since made a full recovery.

Since Kevin’s recovery, he has regained an interest in running and is now looking forward to crossing the finishing line on 23rd April.

“Completing the distance will be hugely satisfying. Bowel Cancer West carry out some very important work and I am proud to be raising money and awareness for this great local charity. They work closely with local GPs and health professionals to aid early diagnosis, ensuring increased survival rates. I know the importance of this as Derriford's Oncology and Colorectal surgery teams saved my life.”
