Story

Hi , This is my old page, thanks for visiting but please see my current 2020/2021 page here www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kevin-webber9 where I talk about the challenges I face to hopefully survive 7 years with terminal prostate cancer.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 6th November 2014 I was told that at just 49 years old I may only live for two years having been diagnosed with prostate cancer which had already spread around my body and was therefore incureable. If I was lucky however the doctor said, I may live for four years. Here I am over five years on and somehow still here. I have dedicated the life that I still have left to enjoy myself, make the best memories for my family and friends and raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK by undertaking 1,000s of miles annually of multiple ultra running challenges. I am no super athlete just an ordinary guy on a mission!

So far for the next 12 months I have signed up for:-

November 2019 , Athens marathon, completed with my friend Nick Butter, his 196th marathon, one in every country in the world, a world first! its my fault too as I inspired him to chase his dreams and he has also raised a load of money for PCUK too, my hero!

December 2019, Ibiza 3 days of racing,  finished with my friend Perry in our “Kevin and Perry Go Large “adventure, a tough steep trail course but beautiful scenery.

100k ultra-x challenge over Xmas completed, running every day for 8 days.

The above has inspired me to add the biggest challenge of the year and that's a RED 2020. RED means run every day and I started that on 23rd December 2019, still going strong on 15th October  (298 days and 3,269 kilometres so far!)  but a long way to go still!

January 2020 Tanners Hatch 30 miles, beautiful winters day, completed in just over 8 hours with an old and new friend, you meet the nicest people on these events you know!

February 2020 Pilgrims Challenge  66 miles, feeling fitter than usual i shaved over an hour off my time , best in the last 5 years despite being a muddy race as ever.

February 2020 Sao Tome 230k ultramarathon, jungle, humid, black cobras and malaria! Finished 45% up the field, met that black cobra only 2 feet away, scared the whotsits out of me. Beautiful race, beautiful country, amazing jungle, beaches and people.

April 2020 ( moved to September because of coronavirus and then cancelled) Marathon Des Sables 250k ultramarathon (my 5th consecutive entry, the only person with any T4 cancer to do this)

April 2020 Back Yard Marathon Des Sables. Because the actual event was moved to September (sadly now 2021) I decided to run the same distance plus a bit from 2019 in my back garden. In total I ran 252 kilometres in a week, about 2,600 laps of my garden. Goes to show that you can always find a way if you really want something!

May 2020 Bhutan 200k ultramarathon , around the foothills of Everest, altitude , breath taking, now cancelled too because of coronavirus and will be May 2021.

May 2020 Sadly Coronavirus is understandably putting paid to organised races. whilst I hope they will return at some stage soon  have set myself three virtual challenges to push myself and prove as ever that you never give up!

Ultra-x virtual series. Solo races of 8k, 15k and 19k in May/June. I can race on a specific day against around 500 others. Race 1 finished 249th, Race 2 up to 202nd recording my fastest 2 miles, 10k and 15k for over 5 years.

May-August The Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee 1,000 kilometres. This virtual race gives you a maximum of 4 months to complete 1,000 kilometres starting 1st May. Finished 27th July.

April 2020 to April 2021 The Virtual  USA Route 66 race. I have a year to complete 3,669 kilometres (now that is a long way!). 180 days in I have run 1,968k  (only 1,701k to go lol).

July 2020 Al Andalus 230k ultramarathon , Spain , very hot and very mountainous, aggressive cut offs (for me anyway!), I timed out on this race in 2017, finished it in 2018, sadly now also a victim of covid-19 for this year.

August 2020 Hangman Ultra, 53k. This was due to be my 5th consecutive however another Covid Victim. Undeterred however I ran it anyway, same course and distance in 6-37, yet again you can find a way if you want it!

19/20 September 2020, I planned to run non stop for 24 hours and see how far I could get. The furthest I have run before in one go  was just over 60 miles and that was before I was diagnosed so now 6 years older and a fair bit less well, this is both a physical and mental challenge.. sadly whilst I exceeded my max distance by running 78 miles in 17 hours I became ill so could not complete the last 7 hours and hit a 100 mile target but I gave it my best shot .

October 2020, as part of the Prostate Cancer UK running month I was hoping to run 32k a day for the month Why 32? because thats how many men die of prostate cancer every day in the UK however an injury I sustained on my 100 mile attempt had left me only able to run short distances whilst I try to recover. What I will be attempting though is a 10 hour race where I have to run 4 miles an hour every hour, I think my leg may let me do that although it is going to be quite a challenge still. Race finished, ran 40 hilly, muddy, rocky miles, did my injuries no favours but just had to do it.

I received unbelievable and humbling recognition as in the Queens birthday honours list I received a British Empire Medal. Whilst I do put myself through it for Pcuk   Without the support of my family, NatWest my employer and everyone who sponsors or supports me in any way I would not have received this award so a massive thank you to everyone above.

There will be more challenges added for November and December nearer the time, perhaps have a go at the 32k a day thing that I could not do in October, I have a few other ideas too!

Anything you give will go to the charity in so far as I pay all of my expenses for all these events. Your generosity will be for every event this year as I would not expect anyone to sponsor me for every individual race.

1 in 8 men get prostate cancer in the UK and a man dies every 45 minutes so I hope like me you can see why it is so important to tame this disease as soon as we can so other men will not be where I am in years to come and their families left devastated in the wake of prostate cancer.

thank you.
