AMMF is the UK's only cholangiocarcinoma charity. Our main aims are to raise the awareness of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer), to provide information, and to support specialised research teams in their work to find the causes, methods of earlier diagnosis and treatments for this disease.

Story

Aunt Cathy passed away at the age of 59 in February 2017 after being diagnosed Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) in early 2016.

To quote from part of Cathy’s eulogy:
“Cathy was a born leader, capable, fiercely independent, and so kind, she was such an interesting person, and I’m sure everyone who knew Cathy couldn’t help but be struck by her strength, her ‘can do’ attitude and her philosophy on life.
Cathy’s desire to do something different from the crowd, to try new things with strong desire to succeed.... she was someone who seemed to instinctively know there was more to this whole living thing than meets the eye”.

I am honouring the memory of Cathy by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with some of my nearest and dearest in June 2019. If Cathy was with us today I’m confident that she would be by our side for this adventure.

We will begin our summit late in the evening on 16th June, which would have been Cathy’s 62nd Birthday, to reach the summit at sunrise on 17th June.

A few facts about climbing Kilimanjaro:
- Kilimanjaro is the worlds highest freestanding mountain at 19,340ft.
- Kilimanjaro has three volcanic cones, Mawenzi, Shira and Kibo. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct but Kibo, the highest peak, is dormant and could erupt again.
- I will be trekking through five climatic zones to reach the summit in seven days using the Machume route.

A bit about Cholangiocarcinoma & AMMF:
- Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) is a primary liver cancer that arises within the biliary system.
- It is a rare but aggressive type of cancer.
- It's not usually possible to cure bile duct cancer because it's often only diagnosed after it has grown and spread.
- AMMF is the UK’s only cholangiocarcinoma charity dedicated to tackling this devastating cancer on all fronts.
- AMMF encourage and support specialised research into the causes, methods of earlier diagnosis and effective treatments for this disease.
