On 18th February 2022 our hearts were shattered when Dad was diagnosed with incurable stage 4 pancreatic cancer. After living life to the full with no previous health issues, and been fit and well albeit with back pain right up to the diagnosis, we we’re absolutely lost for words at the prospect of only having Dad with us for another few years. 

Unfortunately, due to the nature of pancreatic cancer, it often goes undetected until its too late. It is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and continues to be one of the most difficult to treat. In Dad’s case, the cancer had already spread to his liver meaning there was little that could be done. Things turned from bad to worse over the following weeks whilst Dad was in hospital, and only 3 weeks after diagnosis we were told nothing more could be done. Dad came home on Tuesday 15th March, where he wished to be to enjoy the time he had left with his family. Having been told on discharge that Dad would have less than a week at home with us, we are so proud that he continued to fight everyday and prove everybody wrong, giving us just over 2 weeks with him at home. Unfortunately Dad lost his hard faught battle on Wednesday 30th March, just over 5 weeks after diagnosis.

Research into Pancreatic Cancer has been underfunded for decades - only recieving 3% of the UK‘s Cancer Research Budget. Charities like Pancreatic Cancer Action rely on the help of donations to continue to invest in early diagnosis and specialist treatment, in the hope that someday pancreatic cancer patients have a better prognosis and other familes have much longer than we did with their loves ones.
