Muscular Dystrophy UK is the charity bringing individuals, families and professionals together to beat muscle-wasting conditions.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have chosen this charity with my brother, Justin, for personal reasons. His nephew James was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy at the age of 14. Up until that time he had been a typical active boy, particularly enjoying skiing amongst many other outdoor activities. 6 years on he is now reliant mostly on his motorised scooter to get around. Like so many young people struck down with a disability in the prime of life he has shown huge courage in the face of his adversity. ‘Life goes on’ as he would say, and he is currently studying at Reading University where his many interests include acting as a Support Teacher and hosting a Tuesday night Radio show.

So what does the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign do? The Campaign is focused in four main areas leading the fight against this muscle disease:

·         funding world-class research

·         offering free information and advice about care and support

·         providing grants towards equipment

·         campaigning to raise awareness and bring about change

The campaign relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and legacies to fund its work.

What does the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign spend money raised on?

£35 funds an hour of research that could lead us to a treatment or cure to improve and lengthen people's lives.
£50 gives parents one hour with a specialist physiotherapist who can show them the valuable muscle-stretching techniques that could keep their child walking for longer.
£55 funds a Muscular Dystrophy Campaign Care Advisor for 1 hour, in which they can give the practical and emotional support needed by children and adults immediately after a diagnosis.
£148 funds for one day the cost of our freephone Information Line so staff can provide vital support to families and healthcare professionals on a wide range of conditions and issues.
£900 allows the Joseph Patrick Trust (JPT) to make a grant towards the cost of a child'spowered wheelchair.
£1,875 funds staff with specialist knowledge of muscle disease - including occupational therapy, support and expert medical advice - at one of our muscle centres for a week.
£2,000 covers the running costs of a muscle centre for a week, providing diagnosis and multi-disciplinary care.
