More than 10000 people in the UK currently need a transplant. Of these, 1000 per year - that's 3 a day - will die waiting as there are not enough organs available. Those who are lucky enough to receive a transplant often have to endure a very difficult life-long journey, which they share with their loved ones.
The Cambridge Transplant Unit performs, every year, approximately 160 kidney, 70 liver, 20 pancreas and 6 small bowel transplants. While the NHS devotes enormous resources to fund essential transplant services, there is much that depends on our generosity. The ultimate gift we can all give is to register as an organ donor. But we can also make a difference by helping to pay for much-needed extra equipment and professional support that will directly benefit patients and their families.
Let’s not forget that we too may one day be in need of a transplant.
Thank you for your generosity.
