We’ve been improving the lives of those who work or have worked at sea, and their families, for over 100 years. Established in 1917 as The King George's Fund for Sailors, to support the families of seafarers lost at sea during World War One, we support seafarers throughout their career and beyond.

Story

Once again, London URNU will be sending a team of 6 enthusiasts to the Lake District to compete in the 24 Peaks Challenge!!

Over the weekend of the 7th and 8th July, members of the London URNU will be taking part in the 24 Peaks Challenge in the Lake District. The challenge is to walk / run / climb / crawl, 31 miles over 24 peaks, all over 2,400 feet in under 24 hours, whatever the weather! And make it to the finish line all together! A real team-building exercise.

The peaks include eight of the ten highest mountains in England; Scafell Pike, Hevellyn, III Crag, Broad Crag, Lower Man, Great End, Bowfell and Great Gable. The event is described as 'the ultimate test of endurance' with a total ascent over 13,000 feet.

In 2017 our fantastic team completed the challenge in just over 24 hours and won the ‘Happy Hikers Award’ for most cheerful and fun team. Our veterans say we are going to need to be physically fit – but more than that determination, self-belief and team spirit to get us to the finish line!

Sophie who signed up again for the challenge will be joined by Amelia Boyd, Ellie Johnson, Maggie Chan, Nick Markantonis, Sophie Douglas Davies & Thomas White

Whilst we may suffer discomfort over the course of the challenge, this is nothing compared to some of those individuals in the wider maritime community. Seafarers UK protects individuals and their families within the Merchant Navy, fishing fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines who face dangers on a daily basis. Their work relies heavily on donations so we would really appreciate it if you could support our efforts by making a donation to Seafarers UK.
