Marie Curie is here for anyone with an illness they’re likely to die from, and those close to them. Whatever the illness, wherever you are, we’re with you to the end. We bring 75 years of experience and leading research to the care we give you at home, in our hospices and over the phone.

Story

Marie Curie are truly incredible and that is why I am raising money for such a worthy charity.

Unfortunately I know this through my own personal experience and thus it is a charity that is very dear to my heart.

My mum had acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) for 2 1/2 years and underwent endless amounts of chemotherapy and treatment. Sadly the illness took over her life and her body. From the day we found out about the illness to the day she left us she remained passionate about her wishes to end her life in the comfort of her own home. For Mum this was the place she felt safe, happy and at peace and I could not see any reason why at such a terrible time, someone should not be able to have these things. Ensuring that mums desire was met I had several months off work when she became too poorly and cared for her daily at home.

I would not change this choice or decision, but please believe me when I say it was the hardest and most stressful, emotionally draining and upsetting thing I have, and ever will have to go through. Not only was I losing my mum; my best friend, but I was seeing this daily and taking the role of a carer 24 hours a day 7 days a week. That's where Marie Curie came in. They saved me from losing it. I'm no doctor or nurse, I knew little about pain control, about medical advise and monitoring.

Marie curie did. They came in several times a week and spent the whole night with mum. They provided top care and support to her. Having them there meant I could leave the arm chair where I was sleeping in the lounge where Mum's hospital bed had been placed, so I could go out and be a normal young lady, so I could have a rest and so all mums needs where met. They were truly amazing, they offered me a shoulder to cry on, someone who understood, someone to trust and not judge and someone I knew could help mum as well as, if not better than me. They not only helped Mum, but me also as well as my family. Thier kindness, patience, thoughfullness and high quality care made what was the worst time ever a little more bearable.

Mum passed away in April 2011 with me and my brother by her side, in her own home. Although this was the saddest day of my life and one I shall always have with me, I knew I had done all I could and that with the help of the trained specialist nurses and auxillierys of Marie Curie that Mum had been as pain free and as comfortable as possible, somewhere she loved and with those she loved. That is what she wanted and through Marie Curie I was able to give my Mum her last wishes and be somewhere I too felt right to say goodbye.

I am eternally grateful for this support and this trek is my way of saying thank you. Not only that but to raise awariness and funds for Marie Curie in order to let other patients and their families have this support and help at such a very difficult and awful time in their lives.

Please give as much as possible and help me to help them.

This is for you Mum; my Rose.

Much love. xxxxxx
