African Children's Choir (Music For Life)
In 2014, the African Children's Choir celebrated their 30th anniversary. In 1984, the choir's founder, Ray Barnett spent time in war-torn Uganda. Faced with enormity of thousands of orphaned, abandoned and starving children he had been called on to help, he was inspired by the singing of one small boy. The first choir was formed and they toured Churches in North America, raising enough money to build an orphanage back in Uganda, where the second choir was formed.
Throughout the last 30 years, there has been 42 choirs that have toured, helping to raise enough money for their education right through to University. The money raised from the tours has also helped educate over 50,000 children, and helped over 100,000 through relief and education programmes.
The Choir
I will be spending around a year volunteering with the choir, helping, look after the children, and providing them with the support and encouragement they will need while they are away from home.
The children selected are between the ages of 7 and 11, and will form the 43rd African Children's Choir. Many of the children will have lost one or both parents, and come from backgrounds of extreme poverty and war. The children demonstrate the potential within Africa, and after receiving their education and training, will go on to make a huge difference in the lives of their families, their communities and their country.
I am so excited about the opportunity I have been given to spend a year with the choir, and I know it will make a huge impact on my life. I ask that, if you feel you are able, you might consider sponsoring me during this time. I will be extremely grateful for any support I am given.
