What I'm doing and why I am asking for your support

A lot of people take part in Movember at this time of year which raises money for an excellent cause, a charity doing great work in mental health and suicide prevention, as well as prostate cancer and testicular cancer treatment. I have been inspired by this fantastic idea to do my own fundraiser and support a charity that I hold very dear.

I will shave off my beard on the 1st November 2020 and leave the moustache growing until I achieve my funding raising goal, hopefully before the end of November. Please help so I'm not stuck with the moustache any longer than I have to.

Survival International are a movement for tribal peoples' rights that is perhaps more critical to the protection of the natural world than ever before. The following three examples illustrate the importance of the charity's work and how it is linked to the protection of our world:

  • The Amazon rainforest is being burn and cleared at an unprecidented rate and the people of the forest who fight to protect it are being threatened, abused and even murdered. We need to support them and raise awareness (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdTAbgPQuNI)
  • Mining exploitation in India threatens to displace thousands of tribal peoples, polluting their waterways, clearing their forests and forcing their children into dubious factory schools. International attention and pressure helps win legal battles to stop this happening (https://www.survivalinternational.org/dongria)
  • Abuse of tribal peoples' land rights is also leading to the lost of habit for endangered species such as the tiger. Protecting tribal peoples' rights is an effective way to preserve essential natural habitats (https://www.survivalinternational.org/news/11004).

Please help me support Survival International

For over 50 years Survival International has been protecting tribal peoples' rights. They work in partnership with tribal peoples to protect their lives and land. Tribal peoples suffer racism, land theft, forced development and genocidal violence just because they live differently. It must stop.

I have always loved forests, beaches, mountains and what I thought of, when I was a child, as untamed wilderness. Now we know that few truely untamed wildernesses really exist. Even the depths of the Amazon and the mountains of India have been cultivated by humans for hundreds of years to make them more abundant and hospitable. What makes places where tribal peoples' rights are respected different is that the natural environment is not exploited and exhausted the way it is in other areas. Very often indigenious peoples lands are the best protected natural environments in the most world. Ultimately that is why I support Survival International, to protect natural diversity in all it's forms.

I hope you can help, even if it's just a small donation that's great. The more people contributing the more chance there is of hitting the target.
