Story
We are Leeds Marrow, a student-run branch of Anthony Nolan.
For many people with blood cancers such as leukaemia, a stem cell transplant is
their last chance of life. For a transplant to be a success, they
need to find the right match.
However, 70% of people who need a transplant are relying on finding a stranger
who is a match, and 50% never find a match as a suitable donor isn't on the
register.
To increase the chances of finding a match, we need more people on the
register. This is where we come in!
We run recruitment events throughout the academic year at the
University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett, and halls of residence in order to sign
students up to the national Anthony Nolan bone marrow register. This
involves taking a small saliva sample and filling in a basic medical
form. It costs £100 to put one person on the register hence fundraising.
