What is Arbaeen?
The Arbaeen in Karbala is one of the largest peaceful annual gatherings in human history.
It marks forty days after the Day of Ashura, an event that took place in Karbala almost 1400 years ago. On that day, a man named Hussain ibn Ali (the grandson of Prophet Mohammed), along with his family and companions, including his 6-month old baby, were mercilessly killed having refused to pledge allegiance to the corrupt and tyrannical caliph, Yazid.
Witnessing people’s basic rights and dignity being violated by Yazid’s governorship, Imam Hussain knew that in order to preserve the sanctity of Islam, he had to uphold his grandfather’s principles and stand for truth in the face of injustice.
The Story
In the words of the English historian Edward Gibbon: “In a distant age and climate, the tragic scene of the death of Hussain will awaken the sympathy of the coldest reader.”

The significance of the walk
The Day of Arbaeen is the day on which Imam Hussain’s family returned to the land of Karbala from Damascus (Syria), after being taken captive by the enemies, to finally grieve for and bid farewell to their loved ones.
Therefore, on this day, tens of millions of pilgrims travel to the shrine of
Imam Hussain as an act of solemn remembrance and as a pledge of
allegiance to his values.
This year, we will be joining them in completing the 80km walk from the city of Najaf to Karbala, to pay tribute to Imam Hussain’s ultimate sacrifice for social justice, honour, freedom, love and peace.
In doing so, we are hoping to raise funds for the Al Ayn Social Care
Foundation.
Where will your donations go?
Al-Ayn Social Care Foundation is an independent humanitarian organisation, primarily aimed at providing for the needs of orphans in Iraq.
Your donations will go towards covering the costs of medical care, dental care, surgical operations and psychological counselling for orphans, particularly for victims of Daesh (‘ISIS’).
Any donation, however small will be appreciated, as it will help us reach our target!
