We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

Our daughter, Lena Denyer, was born with craniosynostosis, which meant the plates of her skull fused too early.  As her brain grew, her head became misshapened and in time that would create pressure in her brain with severe consequences, including blindness and brain damage.

In June 2011 at age 19 months, Lena underwent a major operation that removed much of her skull, which was then reshaped and rebuilt before being replaced in position.

The operation was carried out with extreme skill by the specialist cranio and neurological team led by Mr Jeelani at Great Ormond Street Hospital(GOSH).

It was the longest and hardest time of our lives. The operation took around 5 hours, after which Lena spent the first 24 hours in the intensive care ward. She was then moved to another ward where she spent a further 3 days. It was an extremley difficult and frightening time. She swelled to an unrecognisable state and needed constant monitoring.

It was horrible to see our baby in such a terrible state, however the staff at GOSH made our stay as stress free and comfortable as possible. The nurses went above and beyond the expected level of care.

Lena is now a bouncing, happy 2 year old and her family want to thank the hospital by aiming to raise £10,000 to purchase essential equipment so the hospital can continue and expand this critical work.

Her family and friends will be walking from Lena's home in Folkestone, Kent to Great Ormond Street Hospital, a distance of around 75 miles.

Along with many family and friends, Lena's older sister Erieann and her Brownie Pack will start the walk with a 5  mile family fun walk on Sunday 17th June 2012. Anyone is welcome to join us on this day.

Lena's parents, relatives and friends will then walk the route through Kent to London, over 5 days, walking approximately 15 miles per day. We will finish the walk on 22nd June 2012 which will be the anniversary of Lena's operation.

Erieann's school, All Souls Primary will also be fund raising.
