The 'Emmy Coates Thyroid Cancer Research Fund' raises money for the Head and Neck Unit at The Royal Marsden Hospital.

Story

Emmy Coates was the most selfless, beautiful, loving and genuine soul you could ever meet, she was fiercely loyal, stronger than she ever gave herself credit for and more beautiful on the inside than she was on the out— and that is truly saying something!

Smile, love and be kind- that’s who she was and how she lived, long before she coined the phrase in a blog she wrote after her diagnosis. She was and always will be the most loved daughter, sister, aunty, wife, niece and best friend. She was the best best friend I could ever have had the fortune to have and losing her never seemed a possibility, she was always there, a constant. Not only do I want to raise money for the Royal Marsden because they are an incredible one in a million institution that give time, miracles, life and hope to so many in the past present and so many in the future, but also because what the Royal Marsden did for her, the time, support, love and how they fought tooth and nail to give her every chance possible is something that those who love her will always be eternally eternally grateful for. Its something that makes me passionate to raise money for them, Emmy and her husband Jake were and still are so so passionate about raising money for the Royal Marsden and I wanted to do something to help (pop over to Mollivers.com to read a much better version of Emmys story and the most beautiful love story of her and her lobster). I want to do something in memory of my gorgeous girl, I want her to know she will never ever be forgotten, she will always be my best friend il always support her and that she is in my (and so many others hearts & always always be).

When Emmy was first diagnosed with Medullary Thyroid cancer the diagnosis seemed like a blessing to her, after a couple of years of horrendous symptoms and no clue as to why she finally had an answer. However within days came the blow it was incurable and had spread and a very bleak outlook was given. She was transferred to the Royal Marsden and from then she was given nothing but the most incredible care, support and treatment. She raved about how amazing they were from the cleaners to the top doctors, everyone seemed to care and couldn’t do enough to help. From that instant she became determined to raise money and awareness for this incredible institution. Whilst facing horrendous symptoms from both the cancer and the treatment, whilst hearing pretty bleak statistics about her future and having her heart broken when being told she would never carry a child all she had EVER wanted, Emmy concentrated not only on loving her new fiancé, her family and friends but also on raising as much money and awareness as possible for the Royal Marsden. She smiled, she lived, she loved, she remained selfless and generous and she showed strength not many of us could ever manage. This girl, this absolute legend cycled on a tandem with the love of her life from London to Copenhagen- yes that’s right she and Jake cycled 2000km in under a month just 2 months after her diagnosis with symptoms most of us would never be able to understand. And that was just the start, in the 15 months of her diagnosis she lived more than anyone I know, she raised over £100,000, started a company Mollivers with her husband Jake writing and illustrating the most beautiful children’s books, won awards, made countless visits, they continued to fundraise while living life to its fullest, spending time with her family and friends and truly living by her motto to ‘smile, love and be kind’. Emmy was a true family girl, her family meant the world to her and I know her loss has left a gaping hole and broken hearts.

Emmy was the most determined, selfless, kindest girl you could ever come across and the legacy she created through her darkest days shows testament to that. Just one personal example of millions of possible examples of her strength and love is that just two weeks before she passed away, she was by my side as my maid of honour, she walked down the aisle, she made a speech, she danced, she made sure she gave time to everyone who was desperate to see her, she smiled and held me, she looked beyond beautiful and she went above and beyond to make me feel loved and special at a time where she was crippled in pain, THAT is the girl she was THAT was the type of best friend she was and THAT is the type of strength, determination, courage and kindness she showed, and that is just one of the ten billion reasons I love and miss her beyond words.

As I said there is a much better version of Emmys story at www.mollivers.com where you can read all about her inspirational story and read her and her husbands love story.

I know purse strings are tight especially after Christmas and I do certainly appreciate that, but I wanted to ask if anyone wanted to make even the tiniest donation I’d be hugely hugely grateful. Now I know I’m not doing anything particularly challenging (and I promise I absolutely will try to think of something in her honour!) but I do have to admit before anyone donates that I will be 34 weeks pregnant and so will have to get the thumbs up from my Midwife nearer the time (mainly because I know emmy would shout at me otherwise!!)

If you have read this far you are an absolute champ and thank you very very much. (If I work out how to link this directly to Emmys page I will)

In her words- smile more, love deeper and be kind always. Xxx
