It's bewildering and unsettling for anyone going into hospital but especially for children and that is why we are a fundraising hospital. We raise funds to enhance the experience of our patients by providing state of the art medical equipment and facilities and creating a child-friendly environment.

Story

On 11th August 2016 and a grand 9 weeks early my little boy Jude Stephen Poppitt was born by emergency C- Section and our lives were turned upside down.

Weighing in at a tiny 3lb 2oz Jude burst onto the scene and the next 8 weeks of our lives were spent relying solely on the wonderful nurses, doctors and staff of the Neonatal wards at our local hospital and Birmingham Children's hospital.

Jude became unwell after he was born and BCH stepped in to help, fix and send Jude on his way to being the happy, funny and adorable little boy he is today.

Jude was diagnosed with 2 episodes of NEC (Necrotizing enterocolitis) and a Malrotation of the bowel, combined with a heart murmur and a small bleed on the brain, he was a rather poorly little boy, and was admitted to BCH for surgery and lots of TLC!

He arrived on the Neonatal surgical ward (NSW) and as a family we were immediately blown away by the level of care and attention Jude received. Within minutes of his admittance on the ward, his surgeon, Registrar Paul Stevens was at his bed side, explaining in detail what the plan of action was. I speak for judes mom and I when I say that those 15 minutes Paul spent reassuring us that everything would be alright meant the world and helped stabilise our already frayed emotions.

At 6 weeks old, and still 3 weeks before he should have been with us, Jude underwent gastric surgery, with Dr Ingo Jester and Mr Paul Stevens and after a few hours we received the amazing phone call that the surgery had gone to plan!

3 weeks post surgery we were formally discharged from BCH and Jude has gone from strength to strength and is the cheeky little chappy that he is today.

We have now been formally discharged from BCH and it is now time for our families to give something back.

I will be running the London Marathon 2019 in order to raise as much money as possible for the ward that saved Jude, the Neonatal Surgical Ward. I have to raise a minimum of £2500 to give something back to the one place I owe everything to. With the kind help of friends, family, work colleagues and the wider community I hope to smash this target.

Birmingham children's is a place no one wants to be with their own flesh and blood, but it is the best place on earth to mend our little ones. They performed a miracle with my little boy and now with the help of everyone else, I want to give something back so they can continue working their magic, every second of every day.

Once you have donated, there is always the added benefit you can then laugh at me on Sunday 28th April 2019 dragging my sorry back side around the capital !

Please take the time to donate and give what you can to this amazing place, not a penny will be wasted.
