Sepsis accounts for 48,000 deaths annually in the UK, that’s more than breast, bowel and prostate cancer put together. Sepsis is what happens when our immune system overreacts to an infection. Symptoms initially present as flu like but can rapidly deteriorate into a life threatening condition.

Story

Sepsis kills over 50,000 people every year in the UK. Patients with suspected sepsis should be given antibiotics within an hour, yet sadly, only 75% of patients get this. Further awareness is needed for this, which is why the charity we are raising money for is The UK Sepsis Trust. The people in this charity are fighting to raise awareness about Sepsis. Their goal is to end preventable deaths from Sepsis and to improve outcomes for its survivors.

The team from Linetime are running the Yorkshire Marathon Relay in support of the Sepsis Trust to raise money for this amazing cause which is close to the heart of one of our participants in particular.

Charnel's story:

Riley James Lucas Bishop - a beautiful, happy, clever little 3 year old. Everyone who met him left with a little more love in their hearts.

I remember Christmas Day 2018, going to visit the family to exchange gifts. My cousin Matthew was there with his girlfriend Amber, and their 3 year old son Riley. Riley had recently undergone surgery to fix a problem with his kidneys, so was not his usual ‘super cat speed’ self. However, the fun that he had with my 2 kids cheered him up, they were playing (tormenting) the cat and being as mischievous as ever. It was time for me to go home to get my kids ready for bed, but my daughter, Lyla, had other ideas. She was refusing to leave, so I did the standard ‘parent’ trick of pretending to leave without her. But Riley, bless him, thought I was genuinely leaving her. “Don’t leave without her! Lyla, your mummy is here!” He said, whilst dragging me back into the room. His little concerned voice was so sweet. This was a perfect example of the sweet, kind and caring little boy he was.

If only I knew that was going to be my last memory of Riley, and the last time I will ever see him. 25 days later, he died.

Riley was taken from us on the 19th January 2019. He was still recovering from the operation he had before Christmas, when he started to get poorly again. Just under 36 hours from going into hospital, Riley died.

Matthew and Amber lost the most important person in their lives. They lost their son. Grandmas and Grandads lost their Grandchild. Aunties and Uncles lost their nephew. Riley died because he had Sepsis.
