Story

I have never been interested in running so far, 10k was my max. This will be a challenge, and so it is being undertaken for a very worthy cause. For those of you who don’t know, this is the epic tale of my dad and his hand.

At Easter in 2019 my dad, Tim Brooks, was working in his yard building a wooden gate. Cutting some wood using a powerful mechanical saw, something went wrong, my dad heard a bang and the saw cut off his left hand at the wrist. Unbelievably, he realised it needed fixing, tourniqueted his wrist with his good hand, picked up his severed hand with his teeth and marched up the road to his house. My life-saving mum rushed him to William Harvey Hospital, who took care of him and blue-lighted him in an ambulance to Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.

Dad was immediately taken into theatre for a 13 hour operation in which surgeons successfully reattached his hand. That weekend he had another emergency operation as the veins were not working and his hand was dying. The most amazing thing is that this was Easter weekend, Dad’s surgeon was driving past with his family and decided to check on Dad. He found his hand dying, sent his family on their way and took Dad straight to theatre! Since then Dad has had 3 more operations and spent 7 weeks in Queen Victoria. These weeks were a huge battle to save Dad’s hand as he suffered from multiple infections.

Dad is still receiving care for his hand and has further operations to go through to improve the function and appearance of his hand. His care has been exceptional, everyone involved in his care did everything they could for him. My parents’ lives changed forever on this day, and all the staff involved have worked hard to allow my dad to keep his hand.

The work done in the burns unit at the hospital has been the best. The staff and facilities do an amazing job to restore people’s lives and for that we will be forever grateful. Please help us support this charity, and say ‘thank you’.
