Fire Walk · 11 May 2011
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page - below is a bit about what I'm doing and why.
As ever, it's all a bit last minute! On Wednesday evening (11th May) I will be taking part in a Fire Walk (that's walking across hot coals by the way) organised by local tax & business advisors, Pentlands. Just taking part has involved a donation to 3 charities chosen by Pentlands but I am free to raise funds for any charity in addition to Macmillan, Myton Hospice and The Philippine Community Fund. I have chosen Cancer Research.
I was pretty hopeless at science at school and dropped anything science related as soon as I could. Although I love the work I do today, I sometimes wonder what it must be like to wake up each day and go to work to contribute to an objective as enormous as that of curing cancer. Clearly that's over simplifying a multitude of specialities and research projects and it's a mighty challenge and a long term goal. However, every breakthrough is a step in the right direction and with your help I'd like to make a small contribution to that journey symbolised by a short walk over some rather terrifying terrain.
This occasional musing was brought sharply into focus a couple of years ago when, as a family, we spent a few months in the middle of a health scare with our eldest boy, Ben. One of the strongest emotions I went through was the feeling of uselessness: if the worst came to the worst we as parents couldn't ‘fix’ this one. We were lucky and our story ended positively as Ben's tumour was benign but it certainly was a worrying time and it made me appreciate the work that is done to try and ensure that the fears for the future that we faced, albeit temporarily, are minimised through ongoing medical research.
Thanks for taking the time to find out about this mini-adventure and any amount you are able to give is very much appreciated. I will update this page after the event with some pics of toastie toes.
Liz
