Story
Its always been my ambition, ever since I was young, to run in the London Marathon. There are so many worthy causes to support but until now, there hasnt been one that has motivated me to get a place and fulfil my ambition.
In the summer of 2012, we finally found out what was causing Alf's discomfort, eczema and stress.......gluten. The only solution and cure - get rid of it from his diet. Like most people, I thought how hard can it be to omit it from your diet? Little did I know that my whole kitchen would need reorganising, a holiday would need considerable planning (a forte of mine), a birthday party would not be straightforward and I would need to learn to cook properly...and fast.
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease. Gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye triggers an immune reaction in people with coeliac disease. This means that eating gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. Other parts of the body may be affected. Untreated coeliac has links with other diseases like osteoporosis, diabetes and bowel cancer.
Our whole family really went through it. The numerous mistakes, discussions and hair pulling episodes drove us all close to insanity at times. Food is a huge part of our lives and having to revolutionise our diets over night was actually quite a challenge. The biggest challenge, however, has been raising awareness without causing offence. So many times Alf has had to turn down a biscuit, we have had to leave a restaurant because they dont have any options for coeliacs, had to pack a lunch for a party or make some cakes so that Alf is included. He is absolutely incredible in these situations and has learnt to cope so well, I am the proudest mum!!
So I am running this to raise awareness, of a disease that is not a food preference, but a real illness that can be really serious. I am running this to heal the past 2 years of adjustment. I am running to thank all my amazing family and friends for including Alfred and trying new recipes (especially my mum!) and I am running because I am so so proud of you, Alfred and how you deal with this everyday.
Its no easy task! To experience it, try taking gluten from your diet for one day........its a real challenge! Far greater than running 26 miles!
If you could sponsor me, I would be so grateful! All money raised will go to Coeliac UK, a charity that supports families and also research into prevention of the disease.
