Story

I'm running a half marathon on March 20th to celebrate the life of my friend James Underhill and in support of my lovely friend Paula and little Harry.

James was extremely passionate about the NHS and dedicated his working life to the Liver Research department at Kings College Hospital.  He served the public for 25 years and having found out much more about what his job entailed and how highly esteemed he was within his field, I would love to assist in buying a specialist piece of equipment for the liver department, in his memory.  I have raised money for a few of the mainstream charities over the years and therefore it would be amazing to raise money for a relatively unsung hero on the charity front and support the work that meant so much to James.

Paula, Jame's wife, wrote this message to give an insight in to James' background:

" James has left an unbearable void for me (Paula) and Harry (his son) and to all those who knew him. James had a passion for science and the NHS and therefore any money raised will be donated directly to support the work of the Liver Research Fund at Kings College Hospital.

Having studied for an MA Gonville & Caius College (Cantab) in Natural Sciences, James worked as a clinical scientist in histocompatibility and immunogenetics, at the Institute of Liver Studies, King’s College Hospital (KCH) for over 25 years; developing and maintaining the
tissue typing and specialised genetic service.

James thrived and enjoyed the process of learning, equally as student, investigator and teacher and considered it a privilege to supervise the work of junior colleagues and felt a particular satisfaction to have contributed to the clinical practice of the Unit by helping, advising and offering practical help to fellows and students with their projects.

Working within a specialised field, James had an exceptional aptitude and understanding for advanced laboratory skills and techniques, with a passion for the genomic and bioinformatic advances. "
