Story

Harry (my school best friend Clare’s youngest son) was born early at 32 weeks, due to the start of a placental abruption. Harry was rushed to NICU where he was put on cpap machine as his sats were 58%. As he improved 5 days later he was put on a hi-flow machine, but developed jaundice so was put under a heat lamp. On day 13 Harry started having apnoeas and was diagnosed with sepsis. A rash started to develop and eventually covered half his body. Rushed back into high intensity, and back on cpap. At birth he had a small hole in his heart which later closed.......... a combination of being born early, placental abruption and sepsis has led to Harry having a PVL and a side effect of this Cerebral Palsy.

What’s PVL? Harry has a condition called periventricular leukomalacia. This has caused Harry’s CP. Due to a lack of oxygen possibly, or infection, some of Harry’s white matter in his brain has been damaged. The reason Harry has bi-lateral, quadriplegic CP is because this damage is on both sides of his brain. What Clare and family have learnt is that the brain is an extraordinary thing, they are currently, literally re-wiring his brain to ensure that he has every possible chance to lead a normal life. This re-wiring is constant. Harry needs maximum stimulation all the time to keep signals going to his brain.

This is where Little Discoverers come in... they provide this stimulation to enable Harry to progress.
