Kai is 16 and a regular attender at Bristol Children's Hospital due to his complex health needs.  Despite being told by his doctors when he was just days old that he would never walk, talk or have any idea what was going on around him, Kai has grown up to be a sociable young man who loves his friends and teachers, the Lion Guard, and his iPad!  Kai has a unique chromosome disorder, epilepsy, haemophilia, severe learning disabilities, joint abnormalities and microcephaly, and has had so many general anaesthetics and surgeries that we've lost count.  He has had a lot to deal with in his life and takes several medications every day, but what always shines through is Kai's great sense of humour.

Kai's dad has participated in several running challenges including the Bristol Half Marathon last year, and every time Kai waits near the finish line with his brother and sister to see his dad finish.  Each time he asks "Me run, Mummy, me run?" wanting some applause (and a medal!) for himself, so after a very difficult couple of years for Kai healthwise we decided 2018 was the year he would get his medal.  We don't know how much of the 10K he will be completing on his feet and how much of it I'll be pushing him in his wheelchair, but we're pretty sure Kai will want to be walking across that finish line under his own steam!

We've supported Above and Beyond for a number of years now, holding bake sales, but this is the first time Kai has ever done anything like this.  The charity makes a real difference to the everyday experience of patients in the hospitals and their families, so we are doing all we can to support them.
