Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Those of you who know me will know I am no runner but when I set myself a challenge there is little that will stand in my way! Training is hard, but I am pushing on because I believe that with the help of you as my sponsors,  we can make a real difference to my chosen charity.

My charity is the Samaritans. Why Samaritans? Well, my mum, my inspiration, my motivation,  devotes a considerable amount of time to the Samaritans, helping those in need, simply because she chooses to.

My training for this event and therefore my fundraising is dedicated to Samaritans across the country who give their time freely.

Mental health,  even in 2016, still carries a stigma. This means that sadly,  many young people and adults alike,  feel embarrassed to talk openly about how they are feeling, through fear of judgement or a lack of understanding. Fortunately for these people, instead of being alone, they have someone to reach out to, and for some, this may just save their lives.

I choose therefore,  to support the people, who support the people.  Help me to raise their awareness further and keep this magnificent charity available to all of us. You never know when you or someone close to you, family member or friend may need this independent support.

Any donations I know will be greatly received by the Reading Samaritans so thankyou in advance for your support.

About the charity

Reading Samaritans are one of about 200 Samaritans branches across the UK and Ireland. Together, we provide a service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing emotional support to people experiencing distress or despair, including thoughts that may lead to suicide. Our service is confidential: we dont judge and we dont give advice. We do listen and provide human contact for people, some of whom may be in very great distress. We can be contacted by phone, email, or face to face by dropping in to our centre in Cholmeley Road in the Newtown area of Reading. All our work is carried out by volunteers, but we still have a building to maintain and bills to pay: it costs us around £100 per day to keep running, and we are entirely dependent on donations. Every day our phone rings over 100 times. Your support will allow us to keep answering it. Thank you!
