Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My late Mum had a stroke aged 63 which left her wheelchair bound and suffering from aphasia for the last 8 years of her life. For someone who really liked to talk it was really hard for her to cope with and in many ways the aphasia was harder to bear than the physical difficulties she had.
Who and what is NETA?
The North East Trust for Aphasia (NETA) is a charity which aims to support people and their families in the North East who have aphasia.
Aphasia (or dysphasia) means problems with communication (speaking, understanding, reading and/or writing) which affect people later in life. This is often after stroke.
Around 58,000 people in the North East have aphasia.
People with aphasia can have:
ü difficulties getting their message across (some people lose their speech completely)
ü problems understanding everything that is being said to them
ü difficulties reading text, from problems reading books to even reading a shopping list
ü problems writing things that they could easily write before.
Aphasia can affect every aspect of people’s lives – their social world, relationships and work. Many people with aphasia stop working because of their communication difficulties.
Our Aims
NETA aims to support people with aphasia and their carersin the North East. Most of the people involved in the charity are people with aphasia or their carers. We want to complement existing services and try and help people get the support they need and want.
