My mum was diagnosed with MS nearly 10 years ago. She was always the most active person, and loved adventures. She spent many years in the Territorial Army and would never let anything stop her, rising to the challenge every time. So any kind of threat to her Independence has been exceptionally difficult to accept and overcome. Despite this, she takes full advantage of when she is well, and has raised money for MS Society through a sponsored parachute jump last year. Watching her do this, I saw the twinkle come back. She felt helpful again, not just someone who has MS and needs help from others. It was awe inspiring.
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a dream of mum's, but sadly her health will not allow her to do this safely. I am therefore doing this challenge for her. Letting someone else do the hard work for a change does not come natural to mum, but I figure It's the least I can do!
The MS society have provided our family with invaluable support when Mum was first diagnosed, and continue to provide her with much needed peer support. It has slowly allowed Mum to adjust to her life, and gain back some much needed and often illusive control seldom had due to the very unpredictable nature of MS. It is such a great worthy cause and one that I am especially grateful, so any monies raised will be a tiny drop in the ocean by a way of thank you.
